Additional Details
The Camas Path a chartered entity of the Kalispel Tribe, was founded with the purpose of fostering an environment that encourages life-long learning while striving for social and economic development that reflects the needs of the individual and Indian community. The Camas Path has planned, developed, and implemented numerous successful projects requiring substantial financial, organizational, and human resources.
The Camas Path’s Counseling and Faith-Based Services for Crime Victims in Indian Country Grant program continues to implement a project that supports the provision of culturally-appropriate faith-based counseling services to victims of crime. The Institute works to promote and utilize collaborative models for local victim assistance programs to join with faith-based organizations, spiritual leaders, and traditional healers in American Indian communities. The project also employs a “strength-based bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach” model, which the Camas Path staff developed, to provide counseling and victim assistance services to American Indians.
The project plans to continue to nurture and build upon partnerships already developed with collaborating partners and community stakeholders. The service population encompasses the Kalispel Reservation and extended community located in Pend Oreille County, as well as the cities of Spokane/Airway Heights located in Spokane County. Camas Path staff continues to strengthen their cooperation with partners including the staff of the Kalispel Tribe Culture, Tribal Court and Social Services departments, Cusick School District, US Attorney’s Office, FBI, and other provider programs within the service area. The Camas Path has continued to strengthen relations with the faith based organizations, victim assistance programs and service providers.
The staff of the Camas Path continues to confer with spiritual leaders and traditional healers of neighboring tribes (Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, Colville, Kalispel) to share information on traditional healing practices for victims and evaluate how the inclusion of these practices have impacted victims of crime. The program continued on-going communication, collaboration, and training with the Kalispel Law Enforcement and other Kalispel Tribal departments including professionals from Mental Health, Chemical Dependency, Indian Child Welfare, Camas Learning Center, Tribal Court, Community Services, and Tribal Attorney’s office. In addition, Kalispel held their annual Tree of Healing conference.
